The sacrum is a bone found at the base of the spinal column. In humans, the sacrum begins as 5 vertebrae and fuses in early adulthood. This sacrum shows fusion of the last lumbar vertebrae, L5 to the first sacral vertebrae, S1. Due to the osteophytic lipping present in the joint space the fusion is likely from severe osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis causes the joint to wear away over time, causing bone to rub together. In severe cases, the bone can fuse together, which can be seen here. This specimen is responsibly sourced and serves as a valuable tool for medical education, osteological research, and those studying human anatomy.
